Frustrated by getting dominated across America by the Shelby Cobra, Chevrolet engineer and Corvette Godfather Zora Arkus Duntov set out to build a new lighter Corvette with the goal of beating those pesky Cobras. Only one problem, GM's corporate ban on sanctioned racing. The result was only 5 cars being built before the GM brass found out, ordered the program stopped and the 5 cars destroyed. Thankfully Duntov thought better and snuck the cars out to private teams where they found success outrunning the Cobra. The most notable win was at Nassau. We can only wonder what could've been if the program hadn't been shut down and the “Corvette Lightweight” had found its way into production.
